During the weekend of the 18th and 19th of December last year, the Manhattan Ballroom in Berjaya Times Square was cajoled by a sudden influx of weeboes and otaku wannabes. The reason? It was the yearly Comic Fiesta. Yes folks, after two years of being in far flung
Sunway, Comic Fiesta came back to civilization, that is the Malaysian capital of Key El. Sadly your editor has a flu after the event and by the time he was back to full health, it was already 3 weeks after the event. But better late than never right?…
With the ease of access this time around, it was sure to be a hit this year, and indeed it was. Roughly 11k people came and bought the ticket this time, the largest crowd ever for a Comic Fiesta weekend. And to think that this place is much more hidden than Sunway, it really does show that a change of venue was all it needed for it to be popular. Alas the change of venue meant that it was also a bit smaller, leading to problems of congestion, especially on the first day.
Crowds came as early as 7.00am to queue, further proving that Malaysians always wait till the very last minute, as they can easily have bought cheaper ticket during the pre-order window. But then again most of them crowds do includes DSLR perverts whose sole purpose is to take photographs of the cosplayers for their viewing pleasure later. It does not help as these newb photographers were one of the main reason that congestion happened, as they were happily snapping away public walkways. Apparently it does not occur to them that legs are made for walking.

With the outside hall being filled with cosplayers and photographers, the real action was inside the hall. As with every year, Comic Fiesta had a lot of activities to spice up the proceedings, especially a treasure hunt of sort where they must look for the CF committee. Also besides the various doujin booths that caters to much of the crowds, there are some other sponsor booths, including from Codemasters KL, and even a special appearance from Phil Ortiz and Phil Yeah, both big names in art and animation from the US of A. Goers were also kept fun by the emcees, and also by the various stage activities, such as performance, cosplay competition and also games.
For the first time as well Comic Fiesta was stream (unofficially) by Radio Emina, an amateur radio station that caters for the Malaysian Japanese Culture market. Various interviews were done by the Deejays with unsuspecting patrons of CF, further showcasing the marketability of the radio
So how was CF2010? It was a hell lot of fun. Packed. But still fun. If they can fix the issue of the crowd it should be better next year. And also it’s time as well that they create the best trap category for cosplay….
